About
Family World Vision is a non-profit organization that is working with orphan, semi-orphan and street children. In our project area, there are a number of orphan, semi-orphan and street children. The problem of orphan / street children is particularly acute due to urbanization and industrialization.
It is further exacerbated by the deaths of HIV/AIDS affected persons, re-marriage of deserted /widowed / divorce women, absence of love and security in the families, family disputes, unwanted pregnancy of trafficked / sexually exploited girls; leaving these orphan and street children without care
and support. These children are involved in rag picking; pick pocketing and participating in anti-social, criminal activities. Therefore we, as Family World Vision, envisage mainstreaming these children by providing care, support and protection for them.
Our Mission:
Mainstreaming the orphan, semi-orphan and street children by providing care, support and protection through shelter, food, and education is our mission.
The Project – An Overview:
We have found that the support given by government to children in these vulnerable positions is inadequate. The project proposed in this scheme is meant for additional support in running an orphanage which is already established and has programmes in place, but which requires additional
funding. As a team of nine, we meet to provide for the emotional, physical, mental and spiritual needs of the children who have found themselves under our care due to varying circumstances mentioned above.
Summary
This orphanage home aims to provide care, support and protection for 30 orphan and street children. This home has two care takers, one teacher, one vocational instructor, one cook, one attendant, and one watchman. A doctor conducts health check-ups and provides medicines. All the residents are provided with three nutritious meals a day, one set of books and four sets of uniforms and regular dresses. Every child has opportunity for indoor and out-door recreation and play
facilities along with training in crafts and hobbies.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
There is an increasing number of children who find themselves in vulnerable in South Africa. Children who are left without parents or adult protection due to the HIV/AIDS pandemic, which has affected KwaZulu-Natal particularly badly. The area has also recently experienced floods, who has aggravated
the situation further, with homes being destroyed and family members lost. There are also the social issues of broken homes, or parents/guardians/child minders who have moved to the cities in order to find work, as well as the other issues previously mentioned.
How will this project solve this problem?
We have been identifying orphans and street children who are eligible for the programme, by previewing. All residents are then provided with counselling, lodging and boarding facilities. We are arranging teaching facilities in nearby schools and providing home tuition, health check-up, medicines, cosmetics, one set of books & two sets of uniform every year. This proposal covers 30 orphans & street
children. Every child is provided with a nutritional diet, indoor and outdoor recreation and play facilities and training in crafts and hobbies.
Potential Long Term Impact
This project has potential and impact, in being able to main stream orphans and street children. Their basic needs are met and they will get new life through gaining knowledge, vocational skills and life skills. They will get love and affection, in line with that parents would provide. Their confidence levels will increase and they will become good assets to the community. They are developed physically,
psychologically, and developed into good and productive citizens. They will inspire by philanthropy and show humanity towards the community.
